Supporting Youth Through Social Emotional Learning

Family Life Project is excited to partner with Claymont Community Center to support youth development through the Empowered Youth Program, an after-school program that provides young people with a safe and engaging space to learn, connect, and grow.

Through this partnership, Family Life Project is helping strengthen youth programming by focusing on social-emotional learning (SEL) and mentorship. These efforts support youth in developing the skills they need to build confidence, navigate challenges, and form healthy relationships.

The Importance of Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) helps young people understand their emotions, develop empathy, and build positive relationships with others. These skills help youth manage challenges, communicate effectively, and make thoughtful decisions.

When youth develop strong social and emotional skills, they are better prepared to succeed in school and in life. SEL helps them strengthen their confidence, manage stress, and build resilience when facing difficult situations.

These skills are developed over time through guidance and practice. Support from parents, educators, mentors, and community programs plays an important role in helping young people build these abilities.

Strengthening Youth Programs Through Partnership

Family Life Project’s collaboration with Claymont Community Center’s Empowered Youth Program reflects a shared commitment to supporting youth and families within the community.

The Empowered Youth Program provides after-school opportunities where young people can participate in activities that encourage learning, personal growth, and peer connection. By working alongside this program, Family Life Project is able to contribute mentorship and social-emotional learning support directly within an established community initiative.

As part of this collaboration, two social work interns from Family Life Project are working with the program to support youth development activities.

The interns participate in the program Monday through Wednesday, helping facilitate discussions, encourage participation, and support youth as they develop important social and emotional skills.

Helping Youth Build Essential Life Skills

Through mentoring and interactive activities within the program, youth are able to develop skills that support their personal and social growth.

These include:

  • Emotional awareness and self-regulation

  • Communication and teamwork

  • Building confidence and self-esteem

  • Developing healthy peer relationships

  • Making responsible and thoughtful decisions

By practicing these skills in a supportive environment, young people gain the confidence needed to navigate challenges and build strong connections with others.

Building Stronger Communities Through Collaboration

Partnerships like the one between Family Life Project and Claymont Community Center demonstrate the value of community collaboration in supporting youth development.

Programs such as the Empowered Youth Program create opportunities for young people to feel supported, valued, and connected to their community. When youth have access to mentorship and skill-building opportunities, they are better equipped to succeed both academically and socially.

Investing in the Future of Youth

At Family Life Project, strengthening families and supporting youth development remains at the heart of our mission.

Through partnerships like this one, we continue to invest in opportunities that help young people build confidence, develop essential life skills, and create positive futures for themselves and their communities.

When youth feel supported and empowered, the benefits extend far beyond the program itself, strengthening families, neighborhoods, and communities as a whole.
